Even though this is not a recipe, it is good information for healthier eating. Often the new year means a new start. And with a new start many of us want to be healthier. Being healthier not only involves being more active, but it also requires eating healthier. But who has the time to devote to an entire lifestyle change with some of the detailed diet plans? For those of us who want to make a change but don’t want it to consume our lives or our wallets, here are 7 easy steps how to eat healthier with little thought.
7 Easy Steps How to Eat Healthier with Little Thought
1. Use Smaller Plates
It only makes sense. Small plates less food, larger plates more food. When eating smaller portions off a larger plate your mind feels like it did not get enough food and leaves you feeling unsatisfied.
This picture demonstrates what the same amount of food looks like on a small and large plate. A full small plate will give your brain the impression that you have had a substantial amount to eat and thus feel fuller.
2. Always Keep Water with You
When you place a glass of water, or water bottle near you, the likely thing to do is sip it throughout the day. This keeps you from grabbing a soda or a less healthy option to quench your thirst.
3. Place Healthy Foods in a Predominate Place
Having fruit or nuts out on the counter or near the door will lend itself to being eaten, rather than the impulse to find something unhealthy to snack on. Putting nuts and fruit in to-go containers near the door is a great solution to remind you to take them with you as you are heading out the door. This way you will be less likely to stop and get fast food or a candy bar etc. when you are hungry.
4. Live by the half plate rule
What is the half plate rule you ask? It is where you fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables. By doing this you are less inclined to over eat on less healthy foods and will be more likely to eat healthier.
5. No Junk Food in the House
Maybe you have more control than I do, but if there is a bag of Cheetos in the house that is the first thing I will reach for to snack on. Make the choice not to have unhealthy snacks in the house and you will not eat them.
6. Portion Control
One thing that most of us abuse is portion size. There is an easy way to keep portions in control and that is the Hand Guide to Portion Control. This picture from Guard Your Health shows by using your hand as a measurement tool how you can keep portions in control.
Granted everyone’s hand size is different and the tip on my index finger is not equal to a teaspoon, but if you follow this as a general guide it will keep portions in control.
7. Roast not Fry
And lastly, if you select roasted or baked foods versus fried foods you will save a multitude of calories and fat. For example, when Two Foods did a comparison of a baked potato and French fries they determined that a 100g baked potato has 91 calories and .13g of fat. The same portion size for french fries has 274 calories 14.08g of fat! Just think of all the calories and fat you will save in a year if you make the healthier choice of baked and roasted foods.
My new year has begun by incorporating these seven easy steps how to eat healthier with little thought. I must admit I already feel better. I wish you a happy and healthy life. These 7 easy steps will help you get there!
